Your options for reporting sexual assault or harassment

If you are sexually assaulted or harassed whilst studying at Flinders, whether on or off campus, know that assistance is available.

  • Students can report directly to police regarding a sexual assault or harassment, with or without informing the University.

  • Reports can be made to the Counsellors and Student Equal Opportunity Advisors in the Health, Counselling and Disability Service on 8201 2118 or counselling@flinders.edu.au.

  • Students can also report directly to external counselling service Yarrow Place, call 1800 817 421. In addition to the counselling and information service, Yarrow Place also provides a free forensic medical service that can aid police in the collection of evidence.

  • Students can learn more about safety and respect on campus, including about reporting options, by visiting Safety and Respect at Flinders

  • Making a report does not initiate a formal complaint.

  • Please note that your information will remain confidential, however, there are some circumstances where it may become necessary to disclose some information. These include if you are at risk to yourself, there is risk to others or it involves a person under the age of 16.

What happens next? CUT OUT??

The University has Equal Opportunity and Grievance policies in place to report an incident on campus, in line with State and Federal legislation.

  • Student Equal Opportunity Advisors are trained to provide confidential support and information in the event of discrimination, sexual harassment and/or sexual assault. Student Equal Opportunity Advisors are trained counsellors and will support you by the outlining your options and supporting you with whatever decision you make, which may include making a formal complaint.

  • A Counsellor or Student Equal Opportunity Advisor will discuss the range of options available and support the actions the student wishes to take – whether it’s raising concerns, or proceeding with a formal report – as per the University’s Grievance Procedures.

  • Whether the student decides to report the incident or not, Student Equal Opportunity Advisors will respect their decision and provide them with support and guidance.

  • If appropriate, a Counsellor or Student Equal Opportunity Advisor may attend appointments as a support person and also look at the impact of the situation on their study (advocate for extensions).

  • The Counsellor or Student Equal Opportunity will communicate with the student in the manner they prefer – in person, by phone or by email. They will update the student on progress and what they can expect, including potential outcomes.

  • The University’s Counselling Service can provide continued support which may include counselling and assistance to negotiate your studies.
